The story begins several years ago with biotech engineer and private pilot Steve Fambro, who began thinking that aircraft design and construction could and should be applied to a hyper-mile electric vehicle. He soon met up with Chris Anthony, a boatbuilder with expertise in composite materials. The two hit it off, and formed Aptera Motors in 2004. To run the new company, they took on 25-year Detroit veteran Paul Wilbur as CEO. For engineering chief, they secured the services of Tom Reichenbach, the former vehicle engineering manager for the Ford GT and Shelby GT500, two old-fashioned high-power heavyweights that are light-years removed from the eco-focused, new-think 2010 Aptera 2e.



The 2010 Aptera 2e is said to have an electric motor that supplies 60 lb-ft of torque from a plug-in battery pack with lithium-ion-phosphate chemistry. All components mount in the nose. We understand that both 10- and 13-kilowatt-hour batteries will be offered. The smaller unit gives a reported maximum driving range of 100 miles, the larger unit about 120 miles.Normal recharging time is about 8 hours from a standard 110-volt household plug. The transmission is an electronically controlled “automatic” with three settings that allow favoring performance, driving range, or a blend.

The 2010 Aptera 2e body is made of a proprietary resin-composite material that’s claimed to weigh half as much as the same structure if rendered in steel. For safety it is also made with the energy-absorbing front and rear crumple-zones, side-impact door beams, aircraft-grade seatbelts, and dashboard airbags.

The 2010 Aptera 2e does come with a good many other features. Highlights include heat-rejecting glass, automatic climate control with pre-drive interior warm-up and cool-down modes, power windows and door mirrors, remote power locks, pushbutton starting, a powertrain immobilizer, and a roof-mounted solar-cell array to run electrical accessories and thus lessen battery drain. Options are limited to an antitheft system, a rearview camera, and a Google-linked navigation system.
