October 27, 2010. The name "Mohammed," in 12 different spelling variations, is the most popular name for newborn babies in England and Wales, beating out such longtime favorites as Oliver (#2), Jack (#3), Harry (#4), and -- really? -- Alfie (#5).
As reported by the Daily Mail, since the Office of National Statistics did not consider such spellings as "Mohammad" and "Muhammad" as being the same as "Mohammed," Oliver was considered the top name of the past 12 months, given to 7,364 newborn boys. "Mohammed" and its variations totaled 7,549 children for the same period.
"Jack" had been the top name for newborn boys in England and Wales for the previous 14 years.
"Olivia" was the top newborn girls' name, followed by Ruby, Chloe, Emily and Sophie.
No reason or conjecture was offered for the strong showing of "Mohammed," most commonly used by Muslim families. Muslims make up about three per cent of the British population.
